Meet the para athletes who made headlines with their exceptional performances

Theresa Goh

This latest title comes not in the arena she is most well-known for. This time, the Paralympic swimming medallist is on top of the podium for her achievements with an air pistol. She shot 220.0 in the P2 women’s 10m air pistol SH1 on January 23, en route to taking her first APG gold medal in shooting para sport.

“It’s pretty sweet to be back in sport, and to be validated for the training I’ve been doing. It proves to me that I’ve still got that competitive spirit in me. I still can learn something new and do well in it. This old dog can learn new tricks and do them well.”

Jovin Tan

“Tan, a four-time Paralympian who competed in sailing before the sport was dropped from the quadrennial Games, picked up boccia in 2022 to prolong his athletic career”

‘Tan, who was born with cerebral palsy – a condition that affects the control of his limbs, said: “It’s really a good experience being a debutant (again). “My past experience from para-sailing has actually taught me a lot of things in terms of handling pressure and also to think better… “I am a very competitive person, be it in any sport, but comparing these two sports, they are very different. In sailing, you are battling with weather conditions that we are not able to control while boccia has its own challenges like the venue, the flooring and my opponent on the day.’

“Earlier in the week, the veteran swimmer clinched a men’s 100m freestyle S7 gold, 400m freestyle S7 silver and 100m backstroke S7-S8 bronze. Notably, this is the third time he has completed a hat-trick of gold medals across four Games – he also did so in his debut in 2015, and in Cambodia in 2023.”

“I hope that it will stand as inspiration to future generations of para-athletes, people with disabilities and people without disabilities too, specifically that life can be long, life can be big, and there’s enough space and time for you to do something with your life and enjoy what you do.” When asked if he intends to compete at the 2029 APG in Singapore, Toh said his main focus is to compete and do well at the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles.’
