The spirit of resilience shown by sportsmen and women is the same spirit of resilience that Singapore has, that has made it what it is today, said MP Sitoh Yih Pin. He said sport is a microcosm of life and it is important that Singaporeans inculcate the qualities to be found in great athletes – not just resilience but also fair play, guts and teamwork. Drawing a comparison with Paralympic champion Yip Pin Xiu, Mr Sitoh said that as a country, Singapore has serious limitations of size and lack of natural resources but it need not let them determine its fate. Instead, with the same discipline and determination as Yip, it can continue to come up tops in many ways. Making a similar analogy with Olympian Max Maeder, Mr Sitoh said Singapore is a young country but should not fear going into uncharted waters at high speed as long as it keeps a level head and its eye on the prize. He spoke in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 16).
