Singapore used to view winning medals at the Olympic and Paralympic Games as “a moonshot”. Yet this year, it has three medallists – Jeralyn Tan, Max Maeder and Yip Pin Xiu, said NMP Jean See in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 16). She called on more Singaporeans to recognise that the value of sporting excellence is lasting and wide-reaching, and to acknowledge that there is a price to the process of achieving it. Ms See drew a comparison with the concept of “patient capital” in investing. It requires tolerance for risk, a long time horizon and expectation of below-market returns but outsized social impact. She listed “three Cs” that will be important – first, more corporates stepping up with financial contributions to sport; second, supporting coaches who can be committed to long-term athlete development; and third, that the contributions of athletes are valued by society.
