Gold Coast 2018

The XXI Commonwealth Games (also known as 2018 Commonwealth Games) were held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, between 4th  and 15th April 2018. More than 4,400 athletes including 300 para-athletes from 71 Commonwealth Games Associations participated in 19 sports comprising 275 events. 

Singapore was represented by a 98-member contingent; comprising of 60 athletes, 27 sports team officials and 11 officials from Singapore National Olympic Council and SportSG. The contingent was led by Chef-De-Mission, Mr Lee Wung Yew. Mr Lee Wung Yew is a Singaporean sport shooter, a three-time Olympian, a six-time Asian Games competitor and a thirteen-time Southeast Asian Games medalist. 

Team Singapore successfully attained a total of 9 medals (5 Gold, 2 Silver, 2 Bronze) from three sports, namely Table Tennis, Shooting and Para Sports. Toh Wei Soong clinched the first ever Para Sport medal at the Commonwealth Games in the Para Swimming Men’s S7 50m Freestyle, scoring a Bronze medal at the podium.

Another notable feature was that the, Para Powerlifter Kalai Vanan also managed to attain a Personal Best in the finals of the Heavyweight powerlifting, coming in 9th position.
