Singapore 2015
The 2015 ASEAN Para Games or also known as the 8th ASEAN Para Games was held in Singapore from 3rd to 9th December 2015. It drew 1181 athletes across 10 countries featuring 15 different sports. This was the largest number of sports offered at the ASEAN Para Games in its history.
This was the first time Singapore hosted the ASEAN Para Games. Ms Yip Pin Xiu (Swimming) was selected as the flag bearer for the games and Mr Thomas Yong (Tenpin Bowling) led the pledge taking.
Singapore sent a contingent of 247 people (151 athletes and 96 officials) led by Chef-de-Mission Mr Raja Singh. Singapore competed in all 15 sports and it was the first time we sent in athletes for Archery, 5-a-side-football, goal-ball and power-lifting.
The Singapore team put in a lot of effort and time in training and this has been reflected in the results of the games. We won a total of 63 medals (24 Gold, 17 Silver, 22 Bronze).
Yip Pin Xiu has broken the World Record in the Women’s 50m Backstroke S2 with a time of 1:01.61 and she is the first spexScholar athlete to do so.
There were a total of 6 spexScholars who won medals in the 8th ASEAN Para Games. They are Yip Pin Xiu and Theresa Goh from Swimming, Mohamed Ismail Bin Hussain and Thomas Yong from Tenpin Bowling and Toh Sze Ning and Nurulasyiqah Binte Mohammad Taha from Boccia.
Even though it was the first time Singapore competed in Archery, 5-a-side-football, goal-ball and power-lifting, the athletes did their very best and their performance were satisfactory. The athletes who were competing in Archery won 2 Gold Medals when their target was to at least win 2 Bronze Medals.
