Team Singapore athletes at the Closing Ceremony of the Cambodia 2023 ASEAN Para Games.
Team Singapore’s para athletes concluded their campaign at the Cambodia 2023 ASEAN Para Games (APG), bringing home Singapore’s second largest away haul at the APG, with a total of 44 medals – 12 gold, 15 silver, 17 bronze.
The largest away haul took place at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur APG, with 50 medals – 9 gold, 17 silver and 24 bronze.
On the team’s performance, Chef de Mission, Ms Erynne Lim said, “Our 25 athletes have done Singapore proud and each of the 6 sports we competed in won medals. The coaches, team managers, officials and our athletes’ families and caregivers have all played a key role in our success at the Games. Let’s recognise the hard work and dedication that our athletes and the team behind them have put into flying the Singapore flag high and continue to support our athletes in their sporting journey.”
Major General Osoth Bhavilai, President of the ASEAN Para Sports Federation (APSF) congratulated Cambodia for successfully hosting their first ever APG and all the participating athletes, hailing them as true winners.
The Games were officially closed by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and handed over to Thailand, who will be hosting the 13th APG from 20-26 January 2026 in Korat.
GAMES REVIEW
25 Team Singapore para athletes competed in six sports at the 12th APG, breaking a total of 9 Games Records and 16 National Records, and achieving 17 Personal Bests.
Para Athletics
Muhammad Diroy Bin Noordin defended his gold medal in the Men F40/41 Shot Put event. He had faced stiff competition in the Men F40/41 Javelin and Discus events earlier in the games and did not manage to bring home any medals.
James Ethan Ang Kai Meng won a silver medal whilst breaking the National Record and achieving a Personal Best in the Men T13 400m race, with a time of 51.22. He also won a silver medal in the Men T13 200m.
Para Badminton
The sole medal from para badminton, which was picked up by Tay Wei Ming, was a joint bronze in the Men Singles SU5 category, after conceding to World Number 3, Indonesian Dheva Anrimusthi, in the Semi Finals.
His compatriots, Ang Chee Hiong and debutant Xavier Lim Jie Rui, both ended their campaigns in the Quarter Finals.
Boccia
Aloysius Gan Kai Hong and Gareth Ho Jing Rui swept the silver and bronze medals respectively in the Individual BC3 Male category, after finishing 2nd and 3rd out of 5 in their round robin matches.
Flagbearer Toh Sze Ning picked up the bronze medal in the Individual BC3 Female category. Together with Gan, they also took home another bronze medal in the Mixed Pair BC3 category.
The final Boccia player, Jeralyn Tan Yee Ting, finished with a silver medal in the Individual BC1 Female category.
Para Powerlifting
Nur ‘Aini Bte Mohamad Yasli brought home Singapore’s first medals in women’s para powerlifting at the APG, with 2 bronze medals for Best Lift and Total Lift in the Women Up to 50kg weight class.
Para Swimming
The swim team saw an incredible medal haul of 11 gold, 10 silver and 8 bronze. In total, they broke 9 Games Records and 15 National Records, and achieved 16 Personal Bests.
Colin Soon Jin Guang was the team’s top performer, swimming to 4 gold and 1 silver. His sister, Sophie Soon Jin Wen, followed closely behind, taking home gold medals in all her 3 events.
Toh Wei Soong, who was absent at the last APG in Solo, won the first medal for Singapore. He medalled in all his 5 events, 3 gold and 2 silver. Danielle Moi, who also medalled in all her 5 events, took home 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Wong Zhi Wei, who had managed to win 2 silver and 1 bronze medal in his earlier competitions, finally took home the gold medal in the Men 100m Butterfly S13 and ended his campaign with a bronze.
Darren Chan Wei Siang won 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. The youngest Team Singapore para athlete, Janelle Tong Jin Xuan, swam to 1 silver and 3 bronze medals.
Para Table Tennis
Muhammad Dinie Asyraf Bin Huzaini took home two joint bronze medals – one in the Men Team TT1-3 match with debutant teammate Rodrick Li Zhixian and another with Claire Toh Shu Min in their Mixed Doubles TT1-3 match. Li and Toh also won a joint bronze and silver medal in their respective single events.
