Solo, Indonesia, 15 Dec 2011 – Team Singapore began its campaign with Table-Tennis at the 6th ASEAN Para Games this morning.
In the only event involving our athletes, paddlers Dr William Tan and Eugene Soh were drawn to face formidable opponents in Wittaya Wichaiwatana and Anurak Lauwong from Thailand.
Playing in their first major tournament, our Singapore pair produced an impressive performance against their much stronger opponents at the Diamond Solo Convention Centre.
With the support of members from the Singapore contingent, both Dr Tan and Eugene showed resilience and determination to give their opponents a tough time.
Our local duo started well but soon found themselves a set down. The challenge from the Thais proved too strong and our paddlers eventually conceded the game (11-5, 11-7, 11-7) in straight sets.
Despite the loss, Singapore coach Chia Chong Boon was positive with the performance of our paddlers. “I am quite happy as I had set a target for them to earn at least five points. They managed to get seven points, which betters my expectations.”
Our paddlers will be in action again tomorrow with Dr Tan involved in the Men’s open singles competition as well as the Men’s class-4 doubles competition with Eugene.
The Games Official Opening Ceremony will be held at the Menahan Stadium in Solo this evening beginning at 8pm (Singapore Time).
