Singapore National Paralympic Council
In June 2008, Singapore National Paralympic Council (SNPC) was incorporated to be Singapore’s member representative to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and other regional para sports associations. We focus on enabling our elite disabled athletes to participate in international multi-sports events like Asean Para Games, Asian Para Games and Paralympics. We aim to strengthen the Paralympic movement and Singapore’s Paralympic aspirations, while our key member, Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC), which erstwhile handled this function, continues to provide recreational, rehabilitative and competitive sports services for the disabled both locally and regionally and plays the role of a National Sports Council and National Sports Association for the disabled.
Since 1973, disability sports in Singapore had been spearheaded by one single agency – the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC). Over the past 40 years, SDSC has seen many rewarding changes from its efforts. From two name changes, hiring full-time staff to moving into an office of its own, one can easily recognize the growing importance of local disability sports. From supporting two national representatives in 1973 to hosting regional and international championships today, SDSC has come a long way in its professionalism and expertise. When the mandate from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) on a common “Paralympic” nomenclature for all National Paralympic Councils was confirmed in 2007, SDSC decided to incorporate a company limited by guarantee with SDSC as the sole key member. Thus on 23 June 2008, the Singapore National Paralympic Council (SNPC) was born. Since then, SNPC continues to grow from strength to strength, with an ever increasing number of disabled athletes being send to represent Singapore in international Para Games. In December 2015, the Asean Para Games will be held in Singapore. As this will be the first for Singapore, SNPC aims to send its largest contingent ever to do Singapore proud and to create a legacy for disability sports in Singapore.
