Announcement of 2017 ASEAN Para Games Selection Results

The Singapore National Paralympic Council (SNPC) Selection Panel chaired by Mr Kevin Wong, Chairman of SNPC and President of Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC), met today to consider the nominations put forward by the various sports and to select the athletes and teams who had made the cut to represent Singapore at the 9th ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur.

The panel selected 92 athletes to compete in 11 sports at the ASEAN Para Games. The selection criteria of a third place finish at the Southeast Asia level was adopted. The panel went through an extensive selection process, ensuring that the standards required to represent Singapore at the major games were maintained. Sports needed to demonstrate that their athletes had achieved competition results that met the criteria to be selected. As this will be the first away game after Singapore hosted the last ASEAN Para Games in 2015, the panel felt there was a need to balance the growth in disability sports with the adoption of clear standards and qualifying criteria. This was made known to all sports and athletes.

We are encouraged that athletes who won the medals at the last ASEAN Para Games have continued to train hard and now given the opportunity to defend their medal. Recognising the need to develop potential athletes, the panel agreed to support a number of athletes who achieved performances better than the 6th place finish results at the last ASEAN Para Games. We hope that through their selection and participation at the games, these athletes would be encouraged to further develop their skills and potential.

Based on the current figures, we are fielding the largest contingent for the away ASEAN Para Games ever. We hope that Singaporeans will head down to Kuala Lumpur and support them.

SDSC and National Disability Sports Associations (NDSAs) will have till 12pm on 13 July 2017 to submit their appeals to SNPC Appeals Panel.
