SINGAPORE PARA-EQUESTRIAN ATHLETES SCORE A 1-2 FINISH AT GERMAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

London 2012 Paralympians Laurentia Tan and Maximillian Tan swept top placings in Freestyle to Music Final.

Singapore’s Laurentia Tan Yen-Yi and Maximillian Tan Chern placed 1st and 2nd in the Freestyle to Music finals for Grade 1A and Grade 1B respectively at the German Para-Equestrian Dressage Championships held in Überherrn, Germany from 8 to 10 Jun. The stellar performance was achieved by beating six other strong contenders from Germany on the final day of competition. Laurentia had earlier clinched two 2nd placings in the Team and Individual Tests during the first two days of competition.

The results are encouraging as the team, comprising two-time Paralympic bronze medallist Laurentia and Paralympic debutantes Max and Gemma Foo, perseveres on their final preparations before the London 2012 Paralympic Games. The team is now the top team in Asia and ranked 11th in the world. They would be the first Asian Para-Equestrian team to participate in the Paralympic Games.

All three riders have cerebral palsy and began riding as therapy at Riding for the Disabled (RDA). Laurentia is also hearing-impaired.

The London 2012 Paralympic Games, which will take place from 29 August to 9 September, will be the team’s next major challenge.
