Singapore has been represented at the Paralympics since 1988 in Seoul Korea. Singapore has since been to the 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004 and the unforgettable 2008 edition in Beijing China.
Our best and most historic moments in the Paralympics came in 2008, where Singapore clinched 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronzes in 2 sports, namely Swimming and Equestrian.
In Swimming, 16 year old, Yip Pin Xiu powered home in the 50m Backstroke for S3 class to a gold medal, and also managed to clinch to the silver, narrowly losing the gold in the 50m Freestyle event for the S3 class.
In Equestrian, Laurentia Tan's 2 bronzes came in the para-dressage for the Grade 1A class. Another bronze followed in the Individual Freestyle event for Class 1A. It is a point to note that in winning these 2 bronze medals, Lauretia Tan has the honour of being the first Asian athlete to ever obtain a medal at the Paralympics for the sport of Equestrian.
For the upcoming 2012 London Paralympics, Singapore already has 7 athletes who have qualified, they are Theresa Goh and Yip Pin Xiu for Swimming, Jovin Tan and Desiree Lim for Sailing and Laurentia Tan, Maxmillian Tan and Gemma Foo for Equestrian.
