Four More Athletes Join the Singapore Contingent for Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

The Singapore National Paralympic Council (SNPC) has selected powerlifter Nur ’Aini Binte Mohamad Yasli and equestrian athletes Laurentia Tan, Gemma Foo and Maximillian Tan to join its contingent to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. This totals a team of 10 athletes who will be representing Singapore at the quadrennial event.

For the first time in history, Singapore will be represented in the sport of para powerlifting. Debutante Nur ’Aini Binte Mohamad Yasli, the first female in Singapore’s national para powerlifting team, shared, “To compete in the Paralympics has always been my dream. I believe that great things can happen when you trust yourself and your ability. My journey would not have been fruitful without my main pillar of support, my mother. Thank you for believing in me and pushing me to always strive for excellence.”

On the other hand, rider Laurentia Tan is a familiar face, having shared the same journey as fellow Paralympian, Yip Pin Xiu. Both debuted and won Singapore’s first Paralympic medals in Beijing 2008. Both are going to Tokyo for their fourth Games together. Laurentia will also be partnering riders Gemma Foo and Maximillian Tan in Tokyo. This will be the trio’s third Paralympic participation in the para dressage team event.

Laurentia shares, “There is no greater feeling than representing your country at the highest level. After all that we have been through the past year, I am elated that the team’s efforts and sacrifices have paid off. Now, just as in past editions, we will give our best and strive to do Singapore proud.”

Singaporeans can look forward to cheering for our national team in six sports, namely archery, athletics, cycling, equestrian, powerlifting and swimming. The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will begin about two weeks after the Olympic Games, on 24 August 2021. Selection for the games will continue till 30 July 2021.
